If we do decide to remove the direct routing topology then we should probably deprecate first as pointed out by @SimonCropp. We also have the option of making that a "long lead time" deprecation if we're worried about the eventual removal happening too quickly.

Closing. We will remove the direct routing topology at some point. It will be deprecated in 5.0.0.
