Recently I did a system upgrade on my GNU/Linux distribution Manjaro and it seemed to break something regarding visuals/models in Open Arena. The lightning gun beam disappeared (rail gun beam was still there), rotating parts of weapons disappeared (machine gun, gaunlet), weird stuff was happening in player setup menu. However, the problem didn't occur on all mods. It occured in BaseOA, RatMod, FailMod and didn't occur in Aftershock, Defrag (didn't check the player setup menu in them).
I got rid of the problem by downgrading glibc from 2.37 to 2.36.

I have this problem too. Fortunately Ioq3 is working on fixes. From what I understand, OA's client QVM binary does an undefined string copy. If that's the case, then it should be possible to fix it in mods even before the pull requests below are merged into Ioq3. I am going to let Ioq3 fix this first in order to keep the maintenance burden on myself low.
