how to transfer strings/ints instead of just chars between the 16u2 and Uno chip?

i tried so much, serial1.read, serial1.readstring (doesnt return anything, same with parseint) i tried using serial.print, write, nothing, sometimes its just random numbers or nothing, what do i do
