padding differences vs mincPlotSliceSeries

I presume that MRIcrotome intends to make this controllable, but here's a big difference I noted in the white space usage between one and the other:

Getting padding right is challenging - right now it involves playing with the overall image dimensions alongside nrow and ncol to make the figure look good. There should be some way to suggest optimal nrow or ncol given certain dimensions, or optimal dimensions given certain nrow and ncol.
