I'm really stuck - Log says "Not connected to GDO" - Help is appreciated

I've been trying to build a rat-ratgdo and have thus far been unsuccessful.

I started with another members D1 mini shield. When I was unsuccessful with this I returned to this page and tried making this breadboard project again.
I'm trying to follow the breadboard exactly but it appears it's not consistent with the instructions.
For example, both MOSFET's appear to be facing the same direction. I assume from the instructions the top one is TX and the bottom one is RX.
It's nearly impossible to determine the pin configuration based on the direction the component is facing.
I have mine facing opposite directions based on mine using Gate, Drain, Source. I've placed the wiring per the written instructions based on those pins.
Another issue is the red and orange wires going to what should be Gate, Drain, TX, and RX on the MOSFET's appear to be coming from just above pin 5 on the breadboard. This would correspond to D1 on the D1 mini. I had to drop down to pins 7 and 8 on the breadboard to make TX and RX line up. This may change slightly based on how far from the edge of the breadboard you put the D1. I tried to match it exactly.
Another issue is the red wire on top goes under the D1. It's not clear which pin it should be connected to. I used D0 but that may not be correct.
I did place a 10k resistor where the blue line is.
I'm trying to follow the directions when I'm connecting to my opener.
I've got two white wires in the middle. Red on the left outside and black on the right outside.
I've tried putting the white wire on either middle white terminal without success.
Any help would be appreciated.
