What will happen if browser synchronization is enabled in one browser, and the local database is used in the second?

I lost about ten fully configured custom links. Instead, the extension settings now display a single link, which I also added some time ago. I use a local database because I don't use ITAD, and the size of the notes database has long exceeded the allowed size for Mozilla Firefox.

Since the last extension update was almost two weeks ago, I assume that the problem is not with the update, but with the browser, which I recently launched for the first time in a long time. It had synchronization of bookmarks, passwords and extensions enabled. Including AS.

I probably also lost all the hundreds of notes I left on Steam since the last browser synchronization on the old computer.

Could the AS settings have been overwritten by the browser, launched for the first time after a long break?

The database setting only affects user notes, otherwise it won't be placed under that section. All other extension settings are stored in synced storage.

I'm no sure how browser sync can fail so sadly I can't be of any help, but to avoid issues like this you can export your settings and import them manually.

The fact that the unexpected synchronization did not affect the notes is very good news, thank you!

Unfortunately, when I started the old laptop, I did not remember what applications were installed on it, what services were running, what services I was logged into, and what data was synchronized and how. Just as I did not make backups of anything on the main computer before turning on the old computer.

Does it make sense to create an issue with a proposal to create backup copies of the synchronized extension settings in the background at a specified time (provided that the browser is running, of course)? For example, five slots with an interval of one day with overwriting the oldest one.

Not sure about that. We may need extra permissions to write arbitrary data to disk, and I feel browser sync issues don't come up that often to justify the extra complexity.
