The First International Workshop on Information Technology Storage Management Specification |
Large Storage Systems and Storage Area Networks (SANs) are emerging as a prominent and independent layer of IT infrastructure in enterprise class and midrange computing environments. To accelerate the emergence of more functional and sophisticated storage systems in the market, the industry requires a standard management interface that allows different classes of hardware and software products supplied by multiple vendors to reliably and seamlessly interoperate for the purpose of monitoring and controlling resources. This interface is targeted at creating broad multi-vendor management interoperability and thus increasing customer satisfaction. To that end, many standard defines an "open" and extensible interface that allows subsystems and devices within the global context of a large storage system to be reliably and securely managed by overlying presentation frameworks and management systems in the context of the rapidly evolving multi-vendor market. In specific, SAN integrators (like end-users, VARs, and SSPs) can, via this standardized management interface, more flexibly select between multiple vendors when building the hierarchy of software systems required to manage a large storage system independent of the underlying hardware systems. Additionally, storage integrators can more flexibly select between alternate hardware vendors when constructing storage configurations.

Abstract: Storage management has become one of the most important technical keys in the field of data storage, which is mainly due to the high cost and growing demand in data managing. Specifically reflected in the deployment and application of storage network infrastructure, it poses a great challenge to the performance, function, security and reliability of network storage system, followed by the large-scale and complexity of storage system, resulting in the higher cost of data management. The storage management standard will be effectively helpful in solving the interoperability and cross regional management of multi-functional complex storage architecture.International and Domestic Standards Updates on Storage Technologies Bio: As an expert of the WGs of the Internet of things and digital twin sub technical committee (ISO/ IEC JTC 1/SC 41), Mr.Wei Sun has successively presided over or participated in the drafting of a number of national standards and industrial standards. He has rich experience in the formulation of standards related to the Iot, technical consultation and the implementation and management of scientific research projects, and promoted the establishment and release of a number of national standards in the fields of petroleum, petrochemical and equipment manufacturing. He also serves as an expert of interconnection of information technology equipment sub technical committee (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25), participated in the drafting and publication of a number of national standards. |

Abstract: With the rapid increase of heterogeneous storage systems for WAN, the management interfaces of these storage resources are different and difficult to manage uniformly.Meanwhile, the current storage management standard SMI-S (Storage Management Initiative specification) is a standard suitable for LAN. SMI-S is difficult to effectively collect and maintain the storage resource information under the whole WAN. This talk introduces an extension method of the managment architecture of SMI-S for WAN, based on a structured peer-to-peer network.Scalability Support for SMI-S in WAN Bio: Doc. Ze Deng is an associate professor with the School of Computer Science, China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, China. He received the PhD degree from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. His research intetests include big data storage and management, spatial data storage and management, and parallel and distributed computing. He has published over thirty peer-reviewed papers. The top journals including TC and TPDS in the field of high-performance computing have accepted his articles. |

The integration and innovation of 5G and AICDE new technologies has brought a wealth of innovative applications and massive data, and also put forward higher requirements for storage devices, an important part of the data center. Based on the development trend of storage technology in the industry, this talk introduces the innovative practice of China Mobile for diversified applications and massive data.Innovative Practices for Diverse Storage Types of China Mobile Bio: Feng Yi working as Project Manager in China Mobile Communication Co.,Ltd, responsible for the formulation of enterprise standards for storage devices. She received her B.S. in Computer science and technology in 2005 from Chongqing Communication Institute. She has worked in HUAWEI Technology Co., Ltd. as Senior Software Test Engineer for years, responsible for the testing of big data storage distributed file system, media network solution SmartCDN (Delivery Network Content), etc. She also worked in Inspur (Beijing) Electronic Information Industry Co., Ltd as Solution Develop Engineer for years, responsible for the development and testing of high-performance storage solutions based on Lustre parallel file system, HCI integration project, and storage disaster recovery project, etc. |

Abstract: For a long time, the key storage applications and high performance requirements are mainly based on FC networks. The emergence of new NVMe technologies brings new opportunities. Ethernet-base NVMe is an implementation of NVMe over Fabric that best fits NVMe semantics. It surpasses FC in terms of performance, cost. It is the development trend of high-speed storage networks in the future. But unlike FC, Ethernet lack a discovery service that enables the automatic addition of nodes to the fabric. And unlink FC, Ethernet switch does not have zone management and does not notify the change of device status. When the device is faulty, the host takes tens of seconds to complete service switchover. This document proposes a proactive notification mechanism of device information and status to enhance the usability and reliability of Ethernet-based NVMe.Notification of device information and status for Ethernet-based NVMe Bio: Lily Zhao is a standard engineer of Huawei. She is responsible for planning and researching storage standards. She has 10 years of experience in design, standards, and evaluation in the storage field. She is proficient in technologies and products in the distributed storage field. She is familiar with industry solutions such as finance, carrier, and HPC. Participated in the standards research work of standards organizations such as NVMe, IETF, Beacon Committee, and CCSA, and held positions in multiple standards organizations, including deputy leader of CCSA TC1WG6 and expert of the Education Technology Sub-Technical Committee of the Information Technology Standards Committee. She received his master's degree from Beijing Jiaotong University. |

Abstract: The storage system is a complex subsystem of the computer system, including different kinds of storage media, file systems, and distributed storage systems. To unify the interface and function of the storage system, there are many standards developed to define interface, function, and evaluation. This talk will introduce standardization organizations in China and abroad, and then introduces various standards of the storage system, including interface, function, performance, energy consumption, and other related standards.Introduction and Analysis of Storage System Standands Bio: Dr. Zhang is an associate professor in the School of computer science at Northwestern Polytechnical University. He received his doctoral degree in 2006. In recent years, he has been engaged in the research of storage systems, computer networks, and distributed file systems. He has published more than 90 papers and participated in the formulation of 6 national standards. |

His main research interests include cloud storage, data repair, network coding, and erasure coding. He has published 8 papers in international conferences and journal including IEEE TPDS, ICPP, ICAIS, etc. |

Abstract: Block devices are the most common storage devices in data centers. This technical specification defines a WAN-oriented interface for the secure, extensible, and interoperable management of a distributed and heterogeneous storage system. This interface uses an object-oriented, XML-based, messaging-based protocol designed to support the specific requirements of managing devices and subsystems in this storage environment.An Introduction to Block Devices in Storage Management Standards Bio: Guanglei Xu received the BE degree in computer science from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), China, in 2020. He is currently working toward the Ph.D degree majoring in computer science at HUST. His current research interests include distributed storage systems and persistent memory. |

Abstract: Compared with traditional virtualization technology, container is widely used because of its lightweight, flexibility and low cost. Gartner estimates that more than 70% of enterprises will use container to deploy applications in 2023. The large-scale use of container applications puts forward higher and higher requirements for storage service. How to provide simple, efficient, safe and standardized storage service interface for container applications has become a hot topic. This report discusses the development of container storage interface(CSI), shares the application practice and customer cases of Inspur storage, and gives suggestions on the current problems and deficiencies.Exploration and practice of container storage interface (CSI) standard Bio: Haijun Zhang, a system engineer of Inspur storage, has more than 10 years of storage product R&D experiences, mainly engaged in the Architecture design for storage-system ease of use, end-to-end resource management, and interoperability. |
Topics of interest for the workshop include, but are not limited to:
- Computer interface definition, such as Filesystems, Block devices, Fabric, Network.
- Storage technology standards, such as Cache, Non-Volatile Memory systems.
- Building distributed storage systems on high-speed networks such as RDMA.
- Models and methodologies for programming, evaluating, verifying, and secure systems.

ITSMS will be a full-day workshop with a single (no parallel) session, with at least 1 keynote and up to 2 invited presentations. Submitted papers should follow the 2-column ACM conference publication style and not exceed 6 pages (including references). Submissions can be research papers, position papers, case studies, or experience reports addressing above topics. Accepted papers will be published in the ICPE companion.
The accepted papers will be published in the ICPE 2022 Proceedings using the two-column ACM format. We propose the following tentative dates for the workshop:
- Paper submission: Feb 10, 2022
- Acceptance Notification: Feb 15, 2022
- Camera ready: Feb 20, 2022
