  • revise initialize.sh and readme.md

I'm not sure it's possible to do this with submodules; have emailed GitHub support to ask.

GitHub support reports that this is not currently possible. Submodules are not copied, so we'll need to stay with initialize.sh for now, but there are ways to improve that workflow.
