Installation Instructions unclear, Can't build dpkgs throws error

I recently found this repo. I am not sure if I shoul follow the "diy Cookbook" instructions on master branch or do I need to checkout ubuntu branch and follow the guide.

Also the build process (following instructions on ubuntu branch) throws an error which says it misses some Dependencies (lib/udev/hwdb .d) see Error:

The DIY Cookbook is just for reference there, to document what steps I took to create the various branches. You should not have to use it, but of course you can use it (But in that case you have to apply the changes manually, which may be above your level).

It is thought that you check out the branch with the libfprint-2-2 version that is available in your distribution.
To determine this run sudo apt show libfprint-2-2 and see what is in the Version: field. Now depending on the version, you check out the relevant branch and follow the instructions in this branch.

The error seems familiar, but this is not enough information for me to help you.
I will need to be able to reproduce the error locally.

Let's start with what OS and version you are running with (Ubuntu 20.04? Debian 11.4? A derivative?), and the version of libfprint-2-2 that is available in your distribution apt repository.

I understand. I surely did not understand what the modify code comment section was all about...And yes as u can guess I am quite new to the whole stuff :D ecspecially when it comes to building etc.

I used the ubuntu_1.94.3+tod1-0ubuntu2 branch. I cloned the whole repo, checked out this branch and followed the steps stated in the readme.md in the branch.

sudo apt show libfprint-2-2

Package: libfprint-2-2
Version: 1:1.94.3+tod1-0ubuntu2~22.04.03

Ubuntu Version

OS: Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS x86_64 
Host: HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eh1xxx 
Kernel: 5.19.0-32-generic 

Also installing build dependencies according to the instruction wont work:

mk-build-deps libfprint-2-2
apt ./libfprint-build-deps_1.94.3+tod1-0ubuntu2~22.04.03_all.deb

However sudo apt install ./libfprint-build-deps_1.94.3+tod1-0ubuntu2~22.04.03_all.deb does work
Do I need to install your .deb in the repo or the builded one?

Hmm, yeah the instructions are assuming an intermediary level of knowledge on terminal and apt packages.

Let's start with the basics.
I run all commands as root, so I'm not entirely sure what commands need to be run as root (At least all apt commands I'm sure). So I would suggest prepending sudo on all commands to be on the safe side.

Now, regarding the libfprint-build-deps_1.94.3+tod1-0ubuntu2~22.04.03_all.deb, you can either build it yourself, or use the one I already included in the repo.
If you want to build it yourself, you have to have mk-build-deps installed (You can install it with sudo apt install devscripts dpkg-dev quilt equivs), and include the dep-src repository for apt (Depending on the Ubuntu distribution, a simple uncommenting of the dep-src lines in the /etc/apt/sources.list file, followed by a sudo apt update should be sufficient.)
I would recommend to just install the deb in the repo with the command you posted sudo apt install ./libfprint-build-deps_1.94.3+tod1-0ubuntu2~22.04.03_all.deb

Also installing build dependencies according to the instruction wont work:

Does that mean you attempted a dpkg-buildpackage -b -uc -us without having the build dependencies installed resulting in the error in your initial OP?

If you encounter another error, it would be helpful to paste ALL commands and their output in something like pastebin.
Example of my local run

P.S.: Note that after building you have to cd .. to the parent folder again, before executing apt install ./libfprint-2-2_1.94.3+tod1-0ubuntu2~22.04.03_amd64.deb. Also the file will probably be named slighty differently (In your case I assume libfprint-2-2_1.94.3+tod1-0ubuntu2~22.04.02_amd64.deb)

Thanks for the tips. This time I uncommented the deb-src lines under /etc/apt/sources.list

I installed all the dependecies as mentioned. Building the package however fails. I pasted the error into pastebin: Error

Well there is your problem.
Try to checkout the branch that is for your version

git checkout ubuntu_1.94.3+tod1-0ubuntu2

Of course I did. It was from a direct quote from your pastebin.
But to be honest, I did NOT expect you to change versions during a support thread, where I previously explicitly asked for the version number...

Nevertheless, I think I found the problem. I actually also have an open Bug report against the Debian version relating to this "Bug".
I have pushed a test branch that you can try to compile.

Just for completeness sake, does the /lib/udev/hwdb.d directory exist in your system, and is the systemd-hwe-hwdb package installed?
