Note: By no means am I suggesting all of these at once, and I hope that these ideas aren't too shoddily thought out.
A couple of ideas to extend progression and make heating early game more varied than just making a bunch of campfires and either leaving them everywhere, or repeatedly making more, as well as provide more aesthetic options for heating in builds. Perhaps there could be portable cooling alternatives in the same vein, but I can't really think of anything that would fit early game.
(Firestarter)
Crafted with 2 sticks.
Used to light Campfires/Firepits/Barrels, but can't light blocks.
30% chance to fail each use. Guaranteed to light on the 5th use. When a firestarter succesfully lights an object, it breaks.
A quick, emergency "I need to light my fire" item, for pre-iron, or quick during-travel crafting.
(Campfire | Vanilla)
Pros: Infinite in clear weather, Easy to Craft
Cons: Breaks without silk touch.
New: Extinguishes in the rain without proper covering. (Perhaps a config?)
(Firepit)
Crafted with 8 stone (or smooth stone, if stone is too easy) in an O shape.
Pros: Portable, Not hard to craft.
Cons: Requires full logs as fuel (1m/log?), and a tool to light it. Doubled consumption when exposed to rain. Light Level 13.
(Covered Fire Barrel)
Crafted with a cauldron in the bottom middle, with 3 copper forming a roof above it.
Pros: Portable, doubled fuel duration, Immune to doubled fuel consumption.
Cons: Degrades (durability, due to iron oxidization. Can be repaired). Light Level 11.
(Fireplace)
Made with 7 bricks/brick blocks in a cauldron shape.
An earlier game alternative to the thermoregulator, that can only heat. Requires full logs to fuel.
Why would this feature be useful?
I feel like there's a pretty big gap between obtaining a portable heat source (Campfires, destroyed on break) and a reusable portable heat source (Silk touch enchant in order to pick up ). I feel a few options to bridge the gap would be nice, and have each one be useful/costly in its own right. Plus, different aesthetics for builders would be nice, rather than requiring only campfires or thermoregulators for their builds to function in survival. Additionally, I believe the firestarter item made with two sticks would be nice for an inconsistent, but earlier game alternative to flint and steel for when you're short on gravel and/or havent obtained iron yet (mostly for the players who take a slower approach to the game)
