Externalizing the core functionality (i.e. the non-Grunt parts)

Would there be interest in externalizing the core functionality of this task? I'm thinking that a part of this task can exist in its own module to allow reuse by other libs (e.g. plugins for other task runners). Selfishly I'm interested in writing a Metalsmith plugin that combines SVG files but I want to avoid duplication of work.
