Issues with missing text

After using tadpole to update my SF2000's firmware (and applying other things like the battery fix, gba bios fix, western console icons, etc.) I end up with my fonts being a problem. For instance the list of games for each console has no text, the Start+Select menu will not show the text for "resume", "quit", 'load", "save", or the game shortcut names are missing on the main menu.

I've not seen anyone else report this here, on reddit, or elsewhere. Any hints on what I could be doing wrong, or how to resolve it? I'm happy to share any files that could help.

Last tried it just now with tadpole 1.01 to go to fw 1.71, but it was the same on other versions of the app and firmwares too. It is actually better in 1.71 since the User menu isn't complete gibberish, which it was when trying to go to 1.6 in previous tadpole builds.
