Thanks for the suggestion. As Maily uses an API key for Giphy to allow to attach animated gifs, I understand that there are two options:

  1. Publish Maily without Giphy support on F-Droid
  2. Create own F-Droid repo with a fully featured Maily version

In the future I assume more services to be integrated that also need API keys, so I guess 2 is the better long-term solution. Then again, this makes it very hard for F-Droid users to install Maily.

Any thoughts on this?

The second is no option for this ticket, because this issue is about the integration in the official f-droid repository.
