From Craig Mills, of Vizzuality:

Wouldn't it be great if we had a list of endangered species for every protected area (200k+). We could monitor the value of these places for refuge, we could highlight when areas and species are under threat. So how do we do it?

First we bring together two massive spatial datasets - the WDPA and the IUCN Redlist species distribution maps. For that we can get the first cut of a list of species.

Second we will need to refine the lists as some species will not really occur in the PAs and others will be missed. For that we can make a mobile application that allows people to refine their lists.

Third we publish the refined lists and make them available as an API for others to consume into applications

After that.... well... the hackers can decide...

So there is already a service set up for the first part - you can see it here:

http://dopa-services.jrc.ec.europa.eu/services/especies/get_pa_species_list

There are also docs included on that page.
