Changing /etc/ files is risky as they are affected by system updates and is prone to causing problems (caused GUI crashes for me). There is a new standard way to add user-defined keyboard layouts: with .config catalogue. Described here: https://codeaffen.org/2023/09/16/custom-keyboard-layouts-with-xkb/
Please, consider moving new layouts to this location. That would also allow to have a simpler installation script.

That is a very interesting idea! Unfortunately, it seems not yet to be respected by everything? In that article is mentioned localetcl, which is already one thing important to some. How are we on different distros, Wayland etc etc, with this .config method?
