Introduction to the Coq proof assistant

Preuve et Déduction Automatique (Coq) is a course that will take place live in Salles HP 309 and HP 303. You can also contact me via e-mail at the address [email protected]

Have a look at the herein resource file for general information about Coq incl. installation instructions.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand and use the Coq proof assistant; in particular to formalize propositional logic, quantifiers inductive types and inductive predicates.

Subject of course

This course gives an introduction to the Coq proof assistant:

Coq is a formal proof management system. It provides a formal language to write mathematical definitions, executable algorithms and theorems together with an environment for semi-interactive development of machine-checked proofs. Typical applications include the certification of properties of programming languages (e.g. the CompCert compiler certification project, the Verified Software Toolchain for verification of C programs, or the Iris framework for concurrent separation logic), the formalization of mathematics (e.g. the full formalization of the Feit-Thompson theorem, or homotopy type theory), and teaching.

The project --- see detailed project description --- consists in modeling sorting algorithms in Coq and getting correct by construction OCaml implementation of insertion sort, quick sort and merge sort using Coq extraction mechanism.

Teaching methods

The course will take place live in Salles Atelis HP 309 and HP 303. See the resource file file for a more precise schedule.

For lab. sessions, the students need to install Coq and CoqIde on their working computer
