In the 2020s, Moebius by Andy Herbert is generally the most suitable viewer for text art. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, and the source is available on GitHub.

ACiD Draw and PabloView for Windows are other possibilities, but their authors have long abandoned both tools.

Image Conversion

Nothing beats Ansilove, an open-source project for converting ASCII and ANSI into image formats such as PNG. We used this tool extensively here at Defacto2 and highly recommend it.
