Currently I'm manually using mapshaper.org to upload a .geojson file and simplify it to 10%. Can this be added to the python script? Mapshaper has a command-line tool, or there might be similar functionality in ogr2ogr or other QGIS-related tools.
This seems necessary to get the Mapbox visual to work - the resulting Tileset doesn't have to be zoomed as far before becoming visible. Also 3 months of data at the original resolution is over 100MB, vs 30MB when simplified to 10%. Mapbox upload is quite slow so 100MB takes a long time and is prone to stalling.

Please hold off on this one for now. I've observed that the process of passing the geojson file through tippecanoe to create an mbtiles file compresses the data dramatically, e.g. 220MB => 37MB.
