例如，第五章中有

此处的 node 与 item 应该都作指针指向的「结点」来理解。

• 关于「whatsit item」，可以参见 Whatsits: when are they used in practice?，可以理解成「有特殊功能的、无特殊名称的结点」。
• 关于「discretionary node」，应该是指分词过程中插入的「可选结点」，见 詞條名稱：必需連字符 及相关内容。如果该结点出现在行尾，则产生 hyphen+penalty（见 New hyphenation techniques in Ω₂，p. 99）。更多语言相关的分词算法可见 Notes on Compound Word Hyphenation in TeX。

本书中，此处说的应该是「在『有限制的水平模式』中，不插入任何更改语言属性的『自由选定结点』与『无名结点』」。
