Is it possible to build 3D microstructure models with internal defects using Dream3D? For example, voids, inclusions
And, for accurate characterization of irregular defects, what type of mesh needs to be output?

Also note that there is a "DREAM3D-Users" google group where these kinds of questions can be asked. Some of those types of defects can be modeled with the "precipitate phase" depending on the size of defect and its total volume fraction.
One might also be able to create the defects in another 3D Program, import the data as an STL file, and use the STL surface mesh as a "mask" when creating the primary phases.
