I'm really new to editing YAMLs, especially ones as incredible as this...

is there a way to make the media card with the play/pause buttons etc control a sonos device which is already in home assistant?

this is one of my favourite things to tinker with (but havent achieved anything yet) so thanks to BigBobbas 👍

i should add, every time i try to update IDs i get this, so i am trying
IDs must only consist of upper/lowercase characters, the underscorecharacter and numbers. The character '.' cannot be used.

Hi there,
i'll have a look at controlling external media for you, it should be reasonably straightforward (famous last words)
With id: if you stick to using an underscore to break up words, that should be fine. eg: kitchen_light that would be fine. If you mean adding entity_id: then those need to be kept exact the same as they are in HA. id: on it's own is purley used internally by the config, so that different parts of the config can reference the id: to access and use that particular section. These are in no way related to entity_id.

If there is anything in particular you need a hand with , please let me know so I or someone else can give you some pointers to help.

it could be theyre not installed in hindsight. everytime i try to upload the new file it crashes my PI

if you are having problems compiling if you add the line below the note here
under the esphome: block near the top your config, it can help with compiling , however it will take longer to compile.

once again you know the answer :) using that trick on the compiler has fixed the other problems as they items hadnt been written into the YAML

On the media player subject I noticed a couple of things.
Going to the media menu, then playing a piper text to speech sentence, plays out at double speed on the s3, but its normal on the web browser. Try the same with google TTS and it plays normally. Not sure if thats an s3 issue or a piper issue.

Secondly, some media files (very small, only a few kbs) don't play at all, whilst others do. And finally, the built in radio browser can't seem to stream to the device at all, not that you'd really want to do that, given the basic capabilities of the speaker in the s3

you can change the sample rate to match that being used by the TTS engine that you are using. details can be found here 👍

With regards to media not playing, if you check in HA>>settings>>devices and services>>ESPHome next to the device, click 'configure' and make sure that service calls are allowed. I have found with radio browser it is a little hit and miss with some stations playing and some not. The audio is handled by an external component on the s3Box which is relatively new and still being actively worked on to add more support.

I have only had occasional issues with playing local media of varying file sizes to the device, can you give examples of the bitrates that the files are. also if you could download to your HA media folder the file here and confirm if this plays for you 👍

That awake file plays fine, the one that doesn't is a wav file with a bitrate of 1411kbps.
As for the radio browser, I've tried a few more channels and its very hit and miss which ones will play, I'm guessing they all have different sampling and bitrates.

FYI, the configuration settings made no difference either way.

for piper the sample rate needs to be
sample_rate: 16000
