Quick summary

We recently tested changing themes on a site, and in that process, where we needed support the most was while we were in the Editor. There is currently no way to access support while in the Editor.

This is a tough one at first glance. There is no admin bar or section that seems like it fits in and it doesn't seem like this section offers any extensible area to inject into easily. One option I do see is registering the Help Center in the command menu. Would that be a viable option?

I think the ideal scenario, would be having it right there, something like the example below. Especially, since while being in the Site Editor is where we've had the most support questions, so we'd want the Help Center to be easy to access.

I agree that dealing with the Site Editor can be challenging and it wold be beneficial to provide inline support there.

Pinging teams @DustyReagan. @okmttdhr and @fushar for awareness as they have been working on the Toolbar.

Could we assess the difficulty of implementing the help center in the Site Editor like this? Thank you!

This approach sounds feasible since Gutenberg supports the extensibility of the command palette. It should not be a very time-consuming task.

Adding the icon next to the search icon also seems doable but it often can be fragile. We should ensure that Gutenberg supports adding items there or consider contributing back to Core for this extensibility. This approach may take more time due to the review process from Core.

contributing back to Core for this extensibility

I think this is key. We sometimes get stuck by things that ned to be fixed in core and would thus benefit all WordPress users. Two examples from the top of my head:

@mrfoxtalbot I disagree, I think this is high priority and if there's a feasible way to be available for our customers in a location where they are frequently confused (even if it's not the ideal solution), we should do that as quickly as possible. That might be what you're saying here, too, just making sure.

Just a note that I am subscribed to this issue now after stumbling on it and would be curious what blockers there are in Core to solve this problem specifically as well as whether folks from DotCom can contribute back to help.

@escapemanuele Could Vertex pick this one up? It's one of the few remaining big picture items on the Support Flows work

To be fair, I don't think that's fully accurate. Once you are in the edit mode, where you spend most of your time in the Editor, there is this Help Center icon at the top-right corner, which opens the Help Center:

Proposing #93362 to display the Help Center icon on the view mode of the site editor. What do you think?

This has been fixed.

Thank you @arthur791004
